The term juke has its origins in West Africa, where similar terms mean “wicked”. Juke joints are thus understood to be potentially rough and rowdy, with drinking, dancing, and live music. They were key incubators of the blues ......

Over 15 years ago, a musical union was formed between Don Fischer and Brandon “Mad Dog” Matheson. Their paths came to a crossroads when they founded the seminal blues group, the Vestals. Matheson cut his teeth playing drums for legends like John Lee Hooker, Lowell Folsum, and J.J. Bad Boy Jones. He has crossed the country performing in venues from CBGB in New York to the Forum in Los Angeles. Originally from Austin TX, Don Fischer has also toured the US, playing historic venues like Austin City Limits, Antones, and Tipitinas. Together, they formed the most rough and tumble rhythm section this side of the Mississippi. As if that weren’t impressive enough, they both assumed lead vocal duties, which sometimes included dual harmonies. They never quite settled on the right guitar player and eventually put the band to rest.

Lead and Slide guitarist, John Stachela, emerged on the Los Angeles blues scene with the high-voltage act “Jessie Payo and the Raindogs.” He quickly established a popular reputation with Jessie’s crowd. There are countless guitar players, but few that possess the touch, skill, and musical background to connect with the human spirit. Stachela’s soulful playing calls to mind legendary predecessors. The LA Music Scene published, “John Stachela on guitar is something to see; during his solos his seamless fingering was dizzying to the eye and blissful to the ear.” He has shared the bandstand with John Mayall, Billy Preston, Robben Ford, Jonny Lang and Los Lonely Boys. And his tireless performance schedule has led him through SXSW, Beale Street Music Festival, and Verizon Music Festival.

The culmination of these talents was fully realized when the JukeHounds were formed in April 2006. This rockin’ blues trio captures the original sounds of the delta and takes the music a little further down the road. Don Fischer writes original music for the band, like “Love, Love, Love” and “Everyday Man” that appear on their debut CD. But you’ll also hear bona fide Texas blues like Lightnin’ Slim and Blind Willie Johnson. Fischer’s bass lines also keep the musical freight train on track, and his vocals embody the authentic Texas-twang. Matheson is a rugged individual. A madman behind the drums, he commands attention and always puts on a show! He can be heard singing Elmore James or Howlin’ Wolf. The guitar torch burns bright with Stachela, who interprets these classics with authority. His slippery slide and soulful licks will satisfy even the most adept critics. In short, the JukeHounds deliver an uncompromising live show that attracts an ever-growing fan base. It’s rough and rowdy blues at its finest.
