New Widespread Panic Album Dirty Side Down!
Speaking of Wanee, Widespread Panic.was obviously a big part of what made it so special this year. Former Allman Brother Jimmy Herring, a longtime HTN favorite, has breathed new life into WSP, helping bring the band to heights they haven't seen since the untimely death of original guitarist Michael Houser.

Dirty Side Down, the band's new studio album, shines with heartfelt, well-written songs and beautiful ensemble playing, further proof that Panic is enjoying a renaissance. Focused and purposeful, with artful production by John Keane, this is one of their finest studio albums. 25 years into their career, at a time when many bands have said all they have to say, Widespread has found their second wind…or, to quote one of their songs, a second skin.

"Saint Ex," inspired by Little Prince author Antoine Saint-Exupery, starts the album on a strong note with it's densely layered sound and intricate structure. Long time live favorites like Jerry Joseph's "North," "Visiting Day" and "Clinic Cynic" are given powerful, definitive versions, and the title track features some of the strongest, most soulful vocals of John Bell's career.

Other highlights include the brooding "Shut Up and Drive," which emerges out of the lush instrumental "St. Louis" and features some of Jimmy Herring's most lyrical guitar playing on record. "True To My Nature" and "When Cotton Was King" are two more examples of instant classics on Dirty Side Down that can stand proudly next to such timeless Panic tunes as "Pilgrims" and "Space Wrangler."

Derek Trucks Band Roadsongs Now In Stock!
The Derek Trucks Band's spectacular new double live CD Roadsongs is a remarkable artistic statement by the DTB, and whether it ends up being their swan song, or just the end of one chapter, it will surely loom large in the band's history. Augmented by a tight horn section, Roadsongs features thoughtful horn arrangements by Mace Hibbard that enhance the music without even sounding cluttered or getting in the way of what the core band is laying down.

And lay it down they do! The rhythm section of Yonrico Scott, Todd Smallie and Count M'butu keep the groove in the pocket at all times, Kofi Burbridge is nothing less than a genius on both flute and keys, and Mike Mattison's soulful wail has never sounded more urgent and piercing. This is a Grammy-winning band with Grammy-winning talent, and they show it over and over again on Roadsongs.

As for the man of the hour, Derek Trucks, it's hard to find new words to express our awe at the level of artistic achievement he reaches on this release. The radiant tone, unique phrasing and endless musical imagination that have made him the guitar hero of his generation are all on display here, and he has never sounded better.

Gov't Mule in Florida!

Besides being incredible musicians, Gov't Mule is a group of caring individuals who aren't afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeve. Warren Haynes has been giving back to the community for years with his Xmas Jam benefit concerts, with all proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity.

Now the Mule team is once again putting their skills in service of the community by playing a benefit show at Cocoa Riverside Park in Cocoa, Florida on August 1st. This event is a benefit to help buy instruments for the Golfview Elementary School in Rockledge, Florida. You may have heard that music programs in public schools are getting cut severely, and Rockledge currently gets ONE dollar per student. If you love music and want the next generation to carry the musical torch, they need your help.

The best part is that all you have to do is go see a great rock concert! For this show the Mule is joined by the multi-talented Jackie Greene, which should make for a special night of music. You may know Jackie from his days with Phil Lesh and Friends, but he is a great songwriter and performer in his own right, with an uncanny ability to sound like he is channeling a young Bob Dylan.

HTN 65 Preview!
While we're at it, let's give you a sneak preview of the next issue of Hittin' the Note. This issue is just about wrapped up and should be showing up in your mailboxes in a couple of weeks, and as always, it is action-packed with insightful articles about the music that really matters.

Our cover story is on the exciting new musical project by the husband and wife team of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. This new band is a departure from both of their previous work, and as anyone who saw them at Wanee or Mountain Jam can testify, the sky is the limit for this all-star collaboration. HTN co-founder Kirk West talks to Derek, Susan and bassman supreme Oteil Burbridge about creating a new band from the ground up in this fascinating piece.

Peter Frampton is a certified legend, and his epic Frampton Comes Alive is still the best-selling live album of all time. After spending some time out of the spotlight, he has come back strong in recent years, and his new album Thank You Mr. Churchill shows him reclaiming his mantle as a rock guitar god.

Other features in this one include stories about music download site, the 20th Anniversary of seminal jamband moe. and an interview with blue-eyed soul master Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates. Derek Trucks Band drummer Yonrico Scott is in the spotlight, with a special spread about his unique artwork. All our usual features and reviews are in this one, including new releases from heavyweights like Jimi Hendrix, Grace Potter, Marshall Tucker Band, Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin.
